Why Women Are Often Missed

Autism & ADHD often go
undiagnosed in women

The ONLY UK service dedicated exclusively to Autism and ADHD assessments for women and girls, delivered by a female-only team with both professional and lived experience.

Our Story

Built to understand neurodiverse women better

Spectrum Sisters was founded by Chay Thompson who regularly saw in both her practice as a social worker, and her lived experience, the vast amounts of neurodivergent women and girls being misdiagnosed, and under-diagnosed and the impact that would have on their lifespan. She also felt even when they were diagnosed, that process itself was commonly very traumatic in itself and service users were often left with no post-diagnostic support and a very limited report that really told them nothing about themselves – only provided a diagnosis.

Passionate about redressing this imbalance, Spectrum Sisters was formed and we now have a growing number of professionals from the fields of psychology, psychiatry, social work, mental health nursing and beyond who support our goals. We are all committed to offering much needed specialised, in-depth, detailed Autism and ADHD assessments and support for women and girls in order to help them to gain clarity, understand themselves better, access the right funding and support, and gain the tools in life to be able to thrive. We operate under stringent regulations, and NICE guidelines ensuring the highest standards of assessment.

Masking

What is Masking?

We know only too well how the female presentation of Autism and ADHD is vastly different from the male presentation.  We know what masking looks like and we also know how deeply it can affect a person’s mental health and wellbeing. Research has shown the devastating impact long-term masking can have on the mental health of children and adults, and we are highly trained to recognise this, making our assessments far more reliable and in-depth.

Why Getting a Diagnosis Matters

Clarity, support, and a safer, more empowered future

Women and girls with autism and/or ADHD are often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Without proper understanding, they may face challenges such as social isolation, poor mental health, and increased vulnerability to harmful situations.

Customer Reviews

Hear from women who finally found clarity, validation, and understanding through our assessments.

“A safe space for women and girls in the autistic community is a rare thing. At Spectrum Sisters, that’s exactly what they provide. A bespoke assessment, regardless of your background, that takes a holistic view of what it means to be autistic. The team are understanding, supportive, and have lived experience of the difficulties they are assessing for. Perhaps the biggest relief is to know you’re not alone. If you’re looking for an assessment, I can’t recommend these women enough.”

“I wasn’t in a great place when I was first introduced to Chay. I had struggled at school for many years, knowing that I was different, but not knowing why I was different. I’d gone to university and had been away from home for a few years. Eventually. I hit burnout, leading to both me taking a few months out of my studies and getting an autism diagnosis. So when it came to going back to studying, I was apprehensive, worried I would just crash again. I was put in contact with Chay as my mentor. Chay really helped me through all this time. She really helped me to get to grips of my autism diagnosis, to understand myself more and she just encouraged me along the way – she’s gone way beyond what was required from her. It was amazing to have her working with me – she restored my belief in myself and made it so much easier going back to university.”

“Spectrum Sisters was recommended to me after my two young daughters were struggling in different ways in certain areas, but were receiving no support as many professionals were writing them off as not neurodiverse due to them not having typical traits. School and homelife was becoming very stressful and we were at a loss as to how to help them. Chay and the team were so patient and understanding with us, explained how girls present so differently, and we got far more than a diagnosis from them. The process was long and in depth, but we were grateful for that, because their reports were very detalled, highly individualised, and gave us specific details of their strengths and areas of struggle, but also a heap of recommendaions nious moving forward that we could easily use to gain support and funding for them. The best part of it though was how they helped us to change our mindset as see that our caughters weren’t broken and didn’t need fixing – they didn’t have ‘bad behaviour’ and that neurodiversity is not a disorder! Through their support we could see that what our daughters needed was the right scaffolding in order for them to thrive, and as a parent that is all you want afterall – for them to be happy.”

Spectrum Sisters is an exceptionally skilled and compassionate team of professionals and I’m so grateful for the care and professionalism they showed me throughout my autism assessment. From the very beginning, Chay and the team were warm, supportive, and incredibly understanding, which helped ease what felt like quite a vulnerable and confronting process. The assessment itself was thoughtfully structured as a staged process, and I felt guided and supported throughout. Alongside how compassionate the team are, what really stood out to me was the team’s depth of knowledge and expertise, particularly in relation to the female presentation of autism. They clearly have a passion for their work and it was clear that they truly understand the nuances that can often be overlooked from years of masking and trying to “fit in”. The final report and recommendations was exceptionally thorough and insightful. It not only validated many of the challenges I’ve experienced but also helped me reframe some of my autistic traits as strengths, which was both empowering and reassuring. I would highly recommend Spectrum Sisters to anyone considering an autism assessment. I have left the entire process feeling both validated and empowered. It has been life changing.

'D'- Autism assessment

Client

I can wholeheartedly recommend Spectrum Sisters and their services. Since it turned out to be quite impossible to get an Autism assessment as an adult here in Germany (with wait lists closed for years), my search for a certified health care provider offering remote assessments lead me to Chay Thompson and her colleagues. Their focus on high-masking, female presentations of Autism and ADHD was the deciding factor for me. Throughout the whole assessment process I felt very well taken care of – be it by the clear, consistent and considerate communication via email as well as during the actual assessment interviews. Opening up about lifelong struggles is an immensely vulnerable thing to do, and both Chay and Dr. Priscila have a lovely way of making you feel safe and seen, never judged and pathologized. Their neurodiversity-affirming attitude was tangible throughout and also clearly discernible in the (very comprehensive and detailed) assessment report. Thank you again for turning what could otherwise haven been a traumatising process into a healing experience!

I initially came across spectrum sisters on a search for support after an ADHD diagnosis from a Right to Chose referral. I was looking for some additional support and answers after the only support I was offered from RTC was medications. I immediately felt connected to them – as neurodiverse female professionals and their specific approach and understanding of neurodiversity from this perspective. Not only was their website a refreshing change from the endless soulless ADHD and autism diagnostic/assessment services, the response I got from Chay and the team helped me feel heard and validated. I didn’t go in with the plan to get an assessment and didn’t feel that I needed any diagnosis. I just wanted support. This is exactly what I received and more. From the outset the whole experience with Chay and Priscilla has not only helped me understand myself, my relationships with others and the world but has guided me onto a path of finally being able to approach the life I have created as myself without the masks. I finally feel like I’m not alone after years of feeling disconnected, misunderstood and separated from the rest of the world. I highly recommend Spectrum Sisters.

I really recommend Spectrum Sisters, as a female affirming diagnostic assessment for Autism/ADHD. It provided a very quick service, rather than waiting years for a diagnosis. Everyone was really kind and patient and professional. They helped me a great deal, and am very grateful for all their support!

Client

A highly professional and authentically inclusive organisation. I approached Spectrum Sisters for an autism assessment. As a 50 year old woman who already has a diagnosis of ADHD, I wanted to find someone who would be able to carry out the assessment with an understanding of ADHD and menopause symptoms. Spectrum Sisters were fantastic. The final report was written in such a neuro-affirming way and really helped me to better understand myself. I would highly recommend them.
